With the January transfer window now open, HITC Sport looks at three key areas in which Sheffield Wednesday may be looking for reinforcements.

After a fairly stop-and-start beginning to their Championship campaign, Sheffield Wednesday’s form looks to be on the rise as they enter one of the most pivotal months in the season. After their impressive 1-0 against Newcastle United over the Christmas perioid, Carlos Carvalhal’s men are looking to kick on up the table now, with Owls fans hoping their manager can add to the side to reinforce their promotion push.

With that in mind, we take a look at three key areas where Sheffield Wednesday might be looking to recruit, to either add something different to their team, or to reinforce an already solid base.

A Central Defender

At times this season, Sheffield Wednesday have been prone to leaking the odd sloppy goal from a poorly defended set piece or from a mistake at the back. With the finest margins often being punished in the Championship, Carlos Carvalhal could very well be looking to strengthen his defence in this window. With Middlesbrough’s Daniel Ayala apparently surplus to requirements at the Riverside, Carvalhal might well take a look at the former Derby and Norwich defender, as he looks to add a bit of strength and height to his central defensive pairing.

A New Full-Back

Further to the addition of a new central defender, Carlos Carvalhal is likely to be on the look out for a new full-back as well this window, as he looks to plug his leaky defence. Despite the recruitment of Jack Hunt, Wednesday have had troubled down the left flank this season, and it has now been reported by sources at HITC that Carvalhal is working on a deal for Charlton left-back, Morgan Fox. The defender has come through the ranks at Charlton, with over 100 appearances under his belt, and has been tracked by a host of clubs, with both West Ham, Aston Villa and Birmingham all making enquiries over the summer.

A New Striker

Despite recruiting Stephen Fletcher over the summer, many Wednesday fans would argue that the club would benefit from the addition of a new centre forward. In need of a prolific goalscorer to cement their place in the play-offs, or even higher, Carlos Carvalhal may well turn to Middlesbrough forward, Jordan Rhodes, who has started just two Premier League games this season. A proven goalscorer at this level, Rhodes would add that extra firepower Carvalhal’s side needs to propel them up potentially into the Premier League.
