Real Madrid were reacquainted with a familiar face on Saturday.

Before he joined Wolverhampton Wanderers for just £1.5 million in January 2018, Los Blancos had tried not once, not twice but four times to sign Rafa Mir from Valencia (AS).

And while the Spanish striker didn’t exactly leave Madrid teary-eyed and wondering what might have been during Huesca’s clash with the La Liga champions this weekend, Mir did enough to show why he had so many admirers at the Santiago Bernabeu two years ago.

The 23-year-old returned to his homeland this summer, joining Huesca on loan from a Wolves side who pushed him further down the pecking order with the £35 million arrival of Fabio Silva.

Now, Mir is unlikely to be challenging for the Pichichi any time soon with Huesca already battling relegation.

But, in an all-action performance against Madrid, the Spain U21 star added an assist to his respectable tally of two La Liga goals. It was Mir’s sumptuous cross which set up Huesca’s consolation for David Ferreiro in the home of the champions.

And while Karim Benzema and the returning Eden Hazard grabbed the headlines after inspiring Real Madrid to a 4-1 win over their newly-promoted opposition, Mir’s performance was certainly a talking point at full-time.

After all, there’s not many Wolves loanees who will dominate a £43 million central defender this season.

You can guarantee that Real’s Brazil international Eder Militao will be glad to see the back of Rafa Mir for a few months.
