Kalvin Phillips has admitted that he was stunned that international teammate Declan Rice awarded him with the Player of the Year award for England.
The West Ham star was the one to tell the 25-year-old Leeds star that he had won the award whilst preparing for this week’s international fixtures with England. Phillips was a breakout star for Gareth Southgate’s side during this summers’ Euros.
The midfielder started every game for England as the Three Lions made it to the final at Wembley Stadium. Phillips shone for England, with the Yorkshire talent forming a great partnership with Rice.
The duo formed a solid base despite concerns before the tournament. And despite the two players being Premier League rivals at club level, Phillips seemingly has a lot of respect for Rice.
Indeed, that still didn’t stop Phillips from fearing the worst when Rice surprised him with the award with England.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, England star Phillips said: “Declan Rice gave me the award, but I actually thought he was playing a joke on me to be fair.
“He walked over with a big smile on his face with something behind his back. I thought he had one of those pies you smash into people’s faces.”

As we know, it was nothing but good news what Rice told Phillips as the West Ham star presented his international teammate with the England Player of the Year award.
Phillips will be hoping to continue his international form with England as they take on Hungary, Andorra and Poland over the next seven days.
