Speaking on the Premier League’s YouTube channel, Ben Foster has named Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip amongst the best centre-back partnerships in the history of the league.

We’ve seen some fantastic centre-half pairings in the top-flight of English football. The likes of John Terry and Ricardo Cavalho, Sol Campbell and Kolo Toure and Vincent Kompany and Joleon Lescott were fantastic in their pomps.

However, for Foster, two stand out above the rest. Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic is the first while Liverpool’s current partnership ranks just below the former Manchester United duo.

What’s been said?

Foster was asked which two Premier League centre-backs he would most-want playing in front of him, to which he replied:

“You could pick two unbelievable centre-backs, but they’re not necessarily going to work together in a partnership well. I’m going to go for Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic. I could have chosen Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip, because those two together are outrageously good, but I’m going to go for Ferdinand and Vidic.”

What about Gomez?

Matip and van Dijk are a remarkable partnership, we’ve seen so much evidence of that just this season, but what about Joe Gomez?

The former Charlton man was van Dijk’s regular partner during the Reds’ Premier League-winning campaign, and there’s an argument to be made that they formed a stronger backline than Matip and van Dijk.

Factor in that Ibrahima Konate is also an option for Jurgen Klopp after his arrival, and it’s fair to say the Reds have one of the best defences in the Premier League.
