Those Tottenham fans criticising Josh Onomah should ease off as patience is key in his development

The Tottenham Hotspur teenager did not have the best of matches earlier this week.

Earlier this week Tottenham Hotspur lost 2-1 to Liverpool in the fourth round of the EFL Cup, with Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino giving some of his teenage prospects a chance to impress.

After the match, 19-year-old Josh Onomah came in for plenty of criticism from those fans who felt he had not done enough to warrant his place in the starting line-up. However they would be wise to remember just how young he is and how important patience can be in a player’s development.

Tottenham supporters need only look at Danny Rose as the perfect example of a player who was chastised by sections of his own club’s fan base before winning them over in superb style.

Rose is now arguably the best left-back in the country, yet that was not always the case. Similarly Onomah must have something if Pochettino is willing to put his faith in him, and in time the teenager could develop into a key player for Tottenham.

While more experienced players sometimes deserve criticism for below par performances, the same cannot be said of teenagers, who are always going to have good games and bad.

Onomah is still in the early stages of his senior career and he will learn from every setback.

While Harry Winks already looks a class act, his young teammate appears to need time to grow into this role, which is no surprise given the challenges of top flight football.

So patience, not criticism, is what is required for a player who deserves far more time to show what he can do.
