Greg Docherty started his first Rangers match against Ayr last time out.
Steven Thompson has told BBC Sportscene Extra’s Facebook Live channel that Graeme Murty could hand Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty his first Scottish Premiership start since his move to Ibrox.
The 21-year-old joined the Light Blues in the January transfer window from Martin Canning’s Hamilton, who are coincidentally Sunday’s opponents, with the Gers travelling to New Douglas Park to face the Accies.
He started his first match for the Gers last time out in the Scottish Cup, as Rangers easily saw off third-tier outfit Ayr United in the fifth round of the competition to book their place in the quarter finals with a 6-1 win.
Docherty impressed in the middle of the park alongside Sean Goss and could now be handed a start against his old side on Sunday. Thompson was asked if he could play from the off, and stated he could after an impressive Ayr bow.
“I think he may, due to injuries and suspensions. I think he did well in the game down at Ayr last weekend as the whole Rangers side did. Their second half was very impressive,” Thompson said.
“It’s difficult to gage, though, because it is a top end Scottish Premiership team against a side two divisions below them. It will certainly give them confidence to have scored so many goals. Rangers will have enough quality to beat Hamilton.”
Docherty was brought to Ibrox following an impressive run of form during the first half of the season for Canning’s side, as he scored three goals and turned provider a further six times in just 21 Scottish Premiership appearances.
It remains to be seen if Murty will start Docherty, with the Scotland youth international facing competition from the likes of Goss, Jason Holt and Andy Halliday, while Graham Dorrans and Ryan Jack remain sidelined.
