Daniel Candeias spoke optimistically of Rangers’ chances of catching Celtic earlier this week.

Former Rangers striker Steven Thompson has ridiculed Daniel Candeias’ claim that Rangers can catch Celtic on BBC Sportscene Extra’s Facebook Live channel.
Candeias, 29, told the Daily Record that Rangers can still the win league despite sitting nine points behind their Old Firm rivals ahead of what is a crucial weekend of Scottish Premiership fixtures.
The Gers can reduce the gap to six points with a win over Hearts on Saturday at Ibrox, before Celtic face a tough test against Aberdeen at Pittodrie just three days after a dismal 3-0 defeat to Zenit St. Petersburg in Russia.

However, Thompson rubbished Candeias’ comments regarding a possible Rangers comeback in terms of the Scottish Premiership title, stating that Celtic will get stronger after being knocked out of the Europa League.
“He’s got to say that as he is a player,” Thompson said. “I’m sure that within the walls of Ibrox that the players will be saying similar things and the manager will be saying similar things.
“I don’t think he should come out and say it necessarily, but I don’t think that’s the case [that Rangers can catch Celtic]. Going out of Europe will be a blessing in disguise for Celtic, they’re going to get stronger now that the season goes on.
“I think they’ll win the league comfortably.”

Assist machine Candeias has been in excellent form for the Gers this season, combining in an attacking-midfield trio of late with Josh Windass and Jamie Murphy behind Alfredo Morelos. He has scored five goals and created another eight.
He is expected to start once again on Saturday as the Gers look to make it seven points from a possible nine against Hearts this season.
