Former Rangers striker has told BBC Sportscene Extra’s Facebook Live channel that if the Gers do not pick up three points against Dundee, then Graeme Murty will not be given the role as manager beyond the summer.

Murty has watched his side go from potential title rivals with Celtic to third place and 13 points adrift within the space of three Rangers matches, after losing to Celtic and Kilmarnock as well as drawing against Motherwell.

The Gers play host to Neil McCann’s Dundee at Ibrox on Saturday afternoon, with the Dark Blues likely to be in buoyant mood after securing a superb 0-0 draw against Celtic at Parkhead this week.

Thompson, who played for Rangers for three years between 2003 and 2006 as well as Cardiff City, Burnley and St. Mirren, reckons Murty will stand no chance if the Gers fail to win.

“Dundee will go into the game with confidence,” Thompson said. “If Rangers were not to take maximum points from this game, having only taken one point from their last nine, it would be astonishing turn of events.

“It would pretty much, for me, signal the end of any chance that Graeme Murty securing the job in the summer.”

Murty, 43, was given the job until the end of the season after impressing in the immediate aftermath as caretaker manager following the sacking of Portuguese boss Pedro Caixinha, who has since taken ove rat Mexican side Cruz Azul.

Three points for the Gers tomorrow could see them leapfrog Derek McInnes’ Aberdeen into second, if Aberdeen lost to Craig Levein’s Hearts at Tynecastle.
