Thompson: Rangers a ‘shambles’ after rejection from Aberdeen’s McInnes

Former Rangers star Steven Thompson has called the club a “shambles” after being rejected by Aberdeen’s Derek McInnes.

Rangers have been labeled a “shambles” by their former striker Steven Thompson after failing to appoint Aberdeen’s Derek McInnes as their new manager.

It has now been over six weeks since former boss Pedro Caixinha was sacked and yet no permanent successor for the Portuguese has been named.

The Glasgow club released a statement on Thursday (December 7) revealing they had indeed made an approach for their preferred choice McInnes, but were knocked back and Thompson doesn’t know what Gers do now.

“What an absolute embarrassment for Rangers Football Club,” the 39-year-old wrote in his Herald column.

“For them to take the length of time they have taken to identify their No.1 target to become their next manager in Derek McInnes and then to not get it across the line, is a shambles. It’s been an absolute disaster.”

Thompson thinks that the main problem is that the board at Ibrox have conducted themselves poorly and indecisively and if they had made a clear move for McInnes after Caixinha was dismissed then the 46-year-old could well be in the dugout by now.

“In my opinion, if Rangers had acted swiftly and gone straight for him as they should have done and approached Aberdeen weeks ago, he may very well have been in the home dugout at Ibrox this weekend. Instead, indecision and pondering from Rangers has left them now looking silly,” the forward continued.

As it is, Graeme Murty will now continue as interim as the search for Caixinha’s successor continues, but as Thompson also alludes to, whoever they now approach will know they were second choice behind McInnes.
