It looks like all of Arsenal’s transfer plans are falling apart. The Gunners, if reports are to be believed, prioritised signing two midfielders before the end of the transfer window later today.

Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Partey has been linked for months now (Telegraph) as has Lyon playmaker Houssem Aouar (RMC Sport). A deal for the latter seemed the likeliest for weeks, but reports confirmed that the Frenchman is not going anywhere in this window. (RMC Sport via GFFN)

That leaves Arsenal in a very difficult position. The window will shut later today, and the Gunners are light in central midfield, especially if Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira complete their moves away from the Emirates.

A deal for Aouar looks highly unlikely now as Lyon will try their hardest to block any move. However, if Arsenal trigger Partey’s release clause, Atletico Madrid will have no say in the deal, and the Ghanaian could make his move to the Emirates.

That too seems very unlikely considering Arsenal’s current financial situation. Partey’s spokesperson, Samuel Zigah, featured on Football360’s Facebook page in August, where he claimed that that the midfielder will leave only when he isn’t needed at Atleti.

Atletico Madrid are desperate to keep him which should end all debate, but a cryptic tweet from Zigah, who claims to be Partey’s Public Relations Officer in his Twitter bio, has raised the excitement levels among Gunners supporters on social media.

That could mean nothing, but on transfer deadline day, anything will get you excited. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang tweeted something very similar before signing his new deal at Arsenal, and many fans feel that this could be a hint too.

Partey would be an incredible signing for Arsenal if the deal goes through. The Atleti star is a powerhouse in central midfield, and his addition will improve the Gunners both in attack and in defence.

The Ghana international has a £45 million release clause (Telegraph) which will have to be paid in full to be triggered. If Arsenal can somehow manage that, they deserve a ton of credit, but it still seems very unlikely considering that the window shuts soon.
