Thomas Frank couldn’t understand the positioning of Weston McKennie and why he was ‘too high’ during Leeds United’s 6-1 defeat to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool on Monday night at Elland Road.

The Brentford boss was making reference to Mohamed Salah’s first goal of the night and why there was ‘no holding midfielder’ to stop Liverpool from breaking on the counter-attack.

For the second game running, Javi Gracia’s side have been torn apart in front of their own supporters and they have now shipped a staggering 11 in just two.

Weston McKennie, who is on-loan from Juventus after his January move, has started both games, with his fellow countryman, Tyler Adams out injured and clearly a huge miss.

It’s a signing that just isn’t working out, but it’s no surprise when the club decided to sack the guy that brought him in – Jesse Marsch – after less than a week after his arrival.

Nonetheless, when talking about Liverpool’s counter-attacking prowess yesterday, Thomas Frank couldn’t understand some of the defensive set-up of the home side, as he told Premier League Productions (17/04/23 at 8:55 pm).

“I think he (McKennie) is too high,” said Frank. “I don’t know exactly what they want. But there is no holding midfielder.

“You are playing against probably the best counter-attacking team in the world when they are on it. Then they can punish you, as they did.”

LEEDS IN FREE-FOR-ALL

The issue for Leeds is that, any time a team hits them with speed or quick off-the-ball movement, the players can’t seem to cope.

Then they have this problem of constantly breaking forward in numbers and leaving so much space behind them.

Even at 5-1 against Liverpool, they weren’t sitting back, but going forward when trying to win the ball or on the ball. These were crazy decisions in which they also showcased against Palace and got smoked.

Well, the same happened against Liverpool and it produced the same result. Leeds are somehow starting to produce their worst performances of the season, at the wrong time.
