Thomas Christiansen’s response when asked if Liam Cooper will be Leeds captain

Leeds United have yet to formally announce a captain for the 2017-18 campaign.

Leeds United head coach Thomas Christiansen has suggested to The Yorkshire Evening Post that Liam Cooper could remain the team’s captain.

The West Yorkshire outfit have yet to formally announce a captain for the team for the 2017-18 campaign.

Liam Bridcutt was the Whites’ skipper last season, but the 28-year-old defensive midfielder is struggling to get into the starting lineup at the moment.

Defender Cooper was the Leeds captain for their Championship game against Bolton Wanderers last weekend.

The 25-year-old, who can operate as a centre-back or as a left-back, did not start against Port Vale in the EFL Cup in midweek, and Luke Ayling, who is also 25 years of age and can play as a defender or as a defensive midfielder, was the skipper.

Pontus Jansson will return from suspension for this weekend’s Championship game against Preston North End at Elland Road, and the Swedish defender is also a candidate for the captain’s armband.

Leeds head coach Christiansen, though, has suggested that Cooper could be the captain if he starts.

Christiansen told The Yorkshire Evening Post when asked if the captain’s armband was Cooper’s to keep: “Why not?

“He is one of the captains in the team and if perhaps he will not play one game then another one will come in and another captain will be chosen.

“For me, it’s not a problem. The problem is to take a good result. The other things – if he wears the armband or is he the captain? I don’t give it too much importance.”
