Leeds United goalkeeper Robert Green is not guaranteed a place in the starting lineup.
Green was the first-choice goalkeeper for Leeds during the 2016-17 campaign and played in all 46 matches for Leeds.
The 37-year-old custodian, though, is not guaranteed a place in the Whites’ first team this season due to the signing of Felix Wiedwald from Werder Bremen in the summer transfer window.
The 27-year-old goalkeeper has arrived at Elland Road with a strong reputation, and the German could establish himself as the first choice between the posts as the season progresses.
Green missed Leeds’s EFL Cup first-round tie against Port Vale at Elland Road on Wednesday evening due to injury, as he himself revealed on social networking site Twitter (click here to read more).
The former West Ham United and Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper have been linked with moves away from Elland Road in the summer transfer window.
The Sunderland Echo reported of Sunderland’s interest in Green last month – the Black Cats have since signed Jason Steele and Robbin Ruiter – while The Sun (print edition, page 63, July 2, 2017) reported of Arsenal’s interest in the goalkeeper (click here to read more).
Leeds head coach Christiansen, though, wants Green to remain at Elland Road and compete for the goalkeeping position.
“He is not in the squad, not in the first 18,” Christiansen told The Yorkshire Evening Post about Green.
“He is a very important player, a very experienced player. I want him to compete, I want him to fight for the first position in the goal.”
