Leeds United stopper Felix Wiedwald was dropped in favour of Andy Lonergan in the Whites’ last match.

Leeds manager Thomas Christiansen looks on during the Sky Bet Championship match between Cardiff City and Leeds United at Cardiff City Stadium on September 26, 2017 in Cardiff, Wales.

Thomas Christiansen has said to the Yorkshire Evening Post that Leeds United goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald knows that he needs to improve.

Wiedwald was brought to Leeds during the summer transfer window, but the German stopper has endured a difficult start to life at Elland Road.

Christiansen clearly wanted to make Wiedwald his number one stopper for the campaign, and showed great faith in the custodian.

However, an error strewn display by Wiedwald in Leeds’ 3-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday proved to be the final straw.

Wiedwald was dropped for Leeds’ last match against Reading, with Andy Lonergan stepping in to replace him.

And Christiansen says that Wiedwald has no issues over losing his place in the team.

“I had my speak with him and told him that I expected more from him,” Christiansen said.

“There has been a good reaction from him. He understood the reason that I gave him.”

Lonergan looks likely to keep his place in Leeds’ goal for their next match against Bristol City.

The Whites were beaten by Reading in their last outing, but Lonergan’s performance was reasonably solid.

If Leeds are able to beat Bristol City at Ashton Gate tomorrow it will end a run of three straight defeats.
