Championship leaders Leeds United defeated Burnley 5-3 on penalties in the Carabao Cup third round tie at Turf Moor on Tuesday night.
After a stalemate first half, the game burst into life when Hadi Sacko opened the scoring for the visitors in the 80th minute.
In the 89th minute, Burnley was awarded a penalty when Gaetano Berardi fouled Kevon Long. Chris Wood, who moved to Burnley from Leeds this summer, restored parity.
Leeds took the lead again in the injury time, when Pablo Hernandez scored from the spot. However, a sublime free-kick from Robbie Brady, deep into the stoppage time, took the game to extra time, and later to the penalty shootout.
It was the first time that the new ABBA format of penalty shoot-out was used with Leeds’ opening effort was successfully converted by Pierre Michel Lasogga.
Leeds completed a full house of successful penalties after Hernandez, Mateusz Klich, Stuart Dallas, and Ezgjan Alioski found the net.
Andy Lonergan, who returned for a second stint at Elland Road, made a crucial save to take Leeds into the next round.
