Leeds United are reported to have been planning an enquiry for the Everton loanee.
The Yorkshire Evening Post reported last week that Leeds United plan to enquire about a permanent deal for Everton loanee Matthew Pennington.
Pennington has played 12 times during his spell at Elland Road, and should get further chances to impress in the absence of Liam Cooper, who is suspended for Leeds’ next four fixtures.
When asked, however, whether his side could turn the Everton man’s deal into a full-time one, Whites boss Thomas Christiansen suggested the decision is out of his hands.
He told Leeds Live on Monday: “This is again something that Victor [Orta, Leeds’ director of football] and the club has to speak about but of course I have always spoken well about Pennington.
“Not only the performances that he has done but also on the human side. How professional he is in the training – even when he is not in the first 11 – how hard he works for the team. And this is a very important player for the squad.”
Warrington-born Pennington has only played nine times for Everton, who handed him a new contract until the end of next season last summer.
Since the 23-year-old’s departure was sanctioned by Ronald Koeman back in July, the Merseyside club have sacked the Dutch manager and replaced him with Sam Allardyce.
And regardless of whether Leeds want to keep Pennington, Allardyce may wish to take a closer look at the player before allowing him to leave for good.
