Thomas Christiansen has suggested that Leeds youngster Conor Shaughnessy boasts plenty of potential, and hinted that he can expect many more chances in the first-team after featuring in pre-season, the Yorkshire Evening Post reports.

The Yorkshire Evening Post reports that Shaughnessy – who moved to Elland Road from Reading last summer – has recently been awarded a new contract by the Whites, and Christiansen hinted with his selection for the friendly with Guiseley at the weekend that the youngster could feature in his plans.

The 21-year-old came on for the final five minutes in the 5-1 win, filling in at centre-back. And after the game, Christiansen expressed his optimism concerning the youngster’s future.

“To see Conor play from the Under-23s, I believe he can have some potential,” Christiansen said, as reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“It’s not his position, he’s more of a number six. Perhaps I will give players from the Under-23s the possibility to play as I did with Conor. He got the opportunity and for sure this player will get more opportunities.”

In the years before their much more promising season last term, it was often the youngsters coming through at Elland Road who provided the few bright points that gave fans reason for excitement.

Now, with a lot more optimism surrounding the club currently, Christiansen will be hoping that the young players making an impact for the under-23s can push for a chance in the first-team as it will undoubtedly help maintain the positivity.

And Shaughnessy will be hoping that his cameo against Guiseley is a sign of things to come, and he can remain in Christiansen’s thoughts over the coming months.
