Thomas Christiansen has suggested that Leeds United will only have eyes on a top six finish in the Championship.

Ahead of his first season in the Championship, Thomas Christiansen has insisted that he would not have taken the Leeds job if he was going to be happy with finishing outside of the play-off places, the Yorkshire Evening Post reports.

Perhaps for the first time for a number of years, there is a real sense of expectation at Elland Road after what the Whites achieved last season – when they finished seventh under Garry Monk.

Any optimism however, appears to be coupled with some caution due to the unpredictability that has come from a number of changes to the playing squad and the appointment of a manager whose only previous experience in the dug-out has come in Cyprus.

But in comments that will please Leeds supporters ahead of the new campaign, Christiansen has suggested that he has the belief in his own ability to insist that anything other than a top six finish will not be good enough.

“I want to make something better than it was last season,” he said, as reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“If I could be satisfied with seventh place, or eighth or ninth I would not be the coach of Leeds. That is the truth.”

With the Championship looking so strong this season, that confidence that Christiansen boasts could be extremely valuable if he is able to instil it in his team.

The players who were at the club last season would have undoubtedly needed a boost given that a play-off spot slipped through their fingers having previously appeared to be nailed on heading into the final weeks of the campaign – but Christiansen appears to have the belief in his own abilities to suggest that they will get themselves into the promotion race once again, and subsequently thrive in the position that saw Monk’s men falter last year.
