Leeds United had to do without Robert Green yesterday.
Thomas Christiansen has revealed to TV Yorkshire that Rob Green was left out of Leeds United’s League Cup win over Port Vale through injury.
The veteteran goalkeeper, who played all 46 Championship games last season, was expected to start the 4-1 win over Vale after Felix Wiedwald started the league win at Bolton.
But there was no sign of the 37-year-old as Christiansen again opted for Wiedwald, with Bailey Peacock-Farrell named on the bench.
There has been a bit of speculation about Green’s future since the German keeper was signed, but the Leeds head coach reveals that it was merely an injury which kept him out.
Asked by TV Yorkshire about Green, Christiansen responded: “He came to me yesterday, one hour before training, and said he had a problem. This is why I left him out.”
While Wiedwald started the Championship opener, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Green displaced him for Saturday’s visit of Preston.
The former Werder Bremen stopper didn’t cover himself in glory for one of Bolton’s goals on the weekend and, on another day, it might’ve cost Leeds the win.
Green is getting older but, as he proved last season, he is still well capable and fitness permitting he might be in the reckoning this weekend.
