Samuel Saiz has arguably been Leeds United’s best player in the Championship this season.

Thomas Christiansen has told BBC Radio Leeds that Samuel Saiz is not for sale during the January transfer window, and joked that the Leeds maestro would cost the same sort of fee as Lionel Messi if he was available this month.

Saiz has proved to be an absolutely inspired signing for the Whites, arguably establishing himself as the side’s talisman. The 26-year-old has scored five times in the Championship and also provided five assists.

And after Leeds’ draw with Nottingham Forest on New Year’s Day, which saw Saiz shine but the Whites fail to break the visitors’ resistance, Christiansen insisted that the Spaniard will not be going anywhere during the January transfer window, before joking – just days after Neil Warnock claimed that Cardiff’s Sol Bamba was a better defender than Virgil van Dijk – that for the money that clubs can land Saiz for, they would also be able to land one of the world’s best.

“He’s not on sale,” he told BBC Radio Leeds.

“If he’s on sale, I believe that he must be as expensive as Messi.”

There is no question that selling Saiz would be a huge blow to Leeds’ promotion hopes given the form that he has shown during his brief time at Elland Road, and thus, Christiansen’s words will ease any fears that the Whites fans may have as the window kicks into gear.

And after a frustrating couple of results, they will surely be hoping that Leeds not only hold onto their best players, including Saiz, but also look to strengthen their ranks further to give them the very best chance of securing promotion this season.

If they do fail to go up, it seems unlikely that Christiansen will be able to provide such an emphatic response if he is asked the same question about Saiz’s future at the end of the season.
