Here’s five of the best young talent in the Premier League.
Seamus Coleman, 22 – Everton
The Irish right back who joined Everton in 2009.
After a quiet start for the Toffees in 2009, Coleman made a significant impact on a loan spell at Blackpool. He is a very attack-minded right back, who plays almost like a winger. If his form continues, (40 appearances and six goals last season), he could help Everton reach the Europa League next season. Looks to be a future star for the Republic of Ireland.
David De Gea, 20 – Manchester United
De Gea, tipped as ‘the new Edwin Van Der Sar’ before moving to Manchester United this summer, helped
Atletico lift the UEFA Super Cup in 2010 by saving a Diego Milito penalty. He shined in the U-21 Euro Championships, helping Spain to lift the trophy. He is very quick, with good composure and presence and will provide Manchester United with a useful addition to the squad.
Chris Smalling, 21 – Manchester United
With his impressive speed and composure, Smalling will hit the season fresh from his sterling campaign with England at the U-21 Euro Championships.
He was named in the Team of the Tournament and Ferguson will doubtless be looking closely at him, especially if Rio Ferdinand continues to struggle.
Daniel Sturridge, 21 – Chelsea
The England U-21 star possesses lethal speed and has a vicious shot. The striker thrived at the Reebok last term, scoring 8 goals in 12 appearances. He now has enough experience to help Chelsea’s ageing squad reclaim the title, and set himself up as the focal point of the team’s attack.
Connor Wickham, 18 – Sunderland FC
The recently signed Sunderland player has been dubbed ‘the next Wayne Rooney’ with his killer instinct in front of goal. He made a name for himself at Ipswich, and has established himself in England’s youth team. He has great physical presence and will definitely be one to watch this season.
