Joe Cole has told BT Sport that Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli really does remind him of Sergio Aguero.

Big potential

Martinelli put in a brilliant performance after being selected to start for Arsenal against West Ham United.

The Brazilian forward burst through the Hammers’ back-line on Wednesday evening to score Mikel Arteta’s side’s first goal of the match.

His high energy performance really caught the eye, as Arsenal put in arguably their finest display of the campaign to date.

And Cole has drawn up a comparison about Martinelli which will surely please the Gunners’ youngster.

He said: “I left the stadium and I was driving away I was thinking this is the first time in 10 years there’s something to work from with Arsenal, there’s a base.

“This lad is outstanding, Martinelli. I’ve always been a big fan of his.

“He reminds me of a young Aguero, who is busy, just like Alexis Sanchez.”

Cementing a spot

If Martinelli can even become half the player of either Aguero or Alexis Sanchez then Arsenal will have a huge talent on their hands.

The 20-year-old is one of a number of Arsenal youngster’s showing real signs of promise though.

Arteta has generally been quite reluctant to use Martinelli from the start during his time in charge so far, but he is really pushing for a regular place in the Gunners’ first choice team now.

Martinelli has started Arsenal’s last four games, and claimed two assists and a goal during that time.

His ability to press from the front really is a bonus for Arteta, whose side are beginning to show signs that they could become a real force if all their young talents go on and fulfil their potential.
