There is fresh concern over Jose Mourinho’s long-term future at Tottenham Hotspur after their season got quite a lot worse on Thursday night.
Spurs were dumped out of the Europa League by Dinamo Zagreb in spite of the fact that they won the first leg 2-0.
Mourinho’s job security – or lack of – seems to be a talking point every few weeks, but things might be getting serious now.
Winning this competition was Tottenham’s best chance of qualifying for the Champions League next season because, as things stand, Mourinho’s side are six points adrift of the top four in the Premier League, sitting eighth.
And former Lilywhites star Jamie O’Hara feels that Mourinho should be sacked, claiming that losing last night was a ‘sackable offence’.
He said live on Sky Sports News: “It’s been an amateur performance. One game to save their season – they have to beat Man City. This is a sackable offence in my opinion. This is shocking. Spurs are out – unbelievable.”
It’s worth remembering that Tottenham also have a League Cup final with Manchester City on the horizon next month.
But even beating City – who, it must be said, have been in frightening form this season – might not be enough to save the Portuguese coach.
Yes, Spurs are without a trophy since 2008, but they did not break their transfer record for £63 million Tanguy Ndombele, build a £1 billion stadium and bring Gareth Bale back to the club simply to win a League Cup.
Chairman Daniel Levy clearly has a big vision for the Lilywhites and that vision might not include Mourinho if they aren’t in the Champions League next term.
