It was a miserable day for a former Arsenal player this afternoon.
The Gunners terminated Shkodran Mustafi’s contract in North London in January after four-and-a-half years at the club.
He was nowhere near being a regular under Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and a decision was made to cut him loose.
Mustafi wasn’t a popular figure among fans of the Emirates Stadium club for a series of costly, error-prone displays at times throughout his spell in the Premier League.
And the former Germany international has just made another one today.
He joined struggling Bundesliga side Schalke and played 90 minutes of their 5-0 defeat by Wolfsburg this afternoon.
And it was Mustafi who inadvertently opened the scoring for the hosts, heading past his own goalkeeper shortly after the half-hour mark, but it was a terrible clearance from the former Arsenal man which led to the goal.
Straight after, he raised both hands and looked to another team-mate in what some Gunners fans believe is an example of him trying to blame somebody else.
