Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to react after the club announced that Gary Caldwell had left his role as interim Under-23 Lead Coach.
What’s the story?
Well, this is a strange one.
Newcastle have announced that Caldwell’s scheduled period in the position has come to an end, which make sense.
However, the Magpies then state that Kevin Richardson – who’s in charge of the Under-18 side – will take over on an interim basis as well.
You have to ask why an interim coach is being replaced by someone else on an interim basis – why can’t a permanent appointment be made?
It’s a very strange situation, as Richardson also has his Under-18 side to take care of – surely it’s far from ideal for him.
To say the least, it’s very odd from Newcastle.
Newcastle must focus on their academy more

For a club of Newcastle’s stature, the lack of quality prospects emerging from the academy is worrying.
Only Sean Longstaff has gone on to become a first-team regular after progressing through the academy.
It looked like his brother, Matty, would too after scoring on his Premier League debut against Manchester United.
However, Newcastle’s handling of him has been awful, and he’s seriously stagnated.

When the likes of James Ward-Prowse, Tyrick Mitchell, and Jack Grealish are coming from the academies of Southampton, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa respectively, Newcastle should be worried.
Especially with Newcastle barely spending in the market, there are plenty of reasons for the Magpies to upgrade their youth system.
Let’s see what the Newcastle fans on Twitter have been saying about the bizarre situation involving Caldwell…
