Arsenal fans are confused over why Edu has offered Eddie Nketiah a new contract.
The Athletic say that Arsenal are looking to tie the young striker down in a move which could protect his value.
However, Gunners fans are concerned that their side is showing a real lack of ambition.
It’s fair to say that there are some doubts over whether Nketiah truly has the ability to become a regular starter at Arsenal.
And the news that he has been offered a contract extension hasn’t gone down particularly well.
Time on Nketiah’s side
Nketiah is still only 22 so has plenty of time to develop, and shouldn’t be written off yet.
However, he only scored two Premier League goals last term, in 17 appearances.
While most of those games may have been as a substitute, he is reaching a stage of his career where he will simply have to start scoring more regularly if he is to break into Arsenal’s starting line-up.
The news that Arsenal are handing Nketiah a new contract may suggest that they don’t plan to bring in a new number nine this summer, which was also referenced in the Athletic’s article.
