Michail Antonio has made himself unavailable for Jamaica’s October international fixtures, via The Gleaner, delighting some West Ham United fans who have reacted on social media.
Antonio declared his future to Jamaica in March after an approach from the Caribbean island nation of his parent’s birth. The Hammers forward ultimately chose to commit his allegiance after failing to make his senior debut for England.
Sam Allardyce and Gareth Southgate had named Antonio in Three Lions squads previously, but each without minutes. The striker is now making a strong case to suggest he deserves a chance, but remains fully committed to Jamaica despite missing the Reggae Boyz’s fixtures.
Antonio has agreed with West Ham and Jamaica to sit out the October international break over travel-related challenges. Theodore Whitmore’s side have World Cup qualifying ties against the United States, Canada and Honduras over the next week.
Whitmore awarded Antonio his Jamaica debut against Panama last month, although the West Ham striker did not score. He will now have to wait until November at the earliest to open his international account after confirming his withdrawal.
“I can confirm that, unfortunately, I will not be joining up with the Jamaica national squad for the World Cup qualifying matches this week,” his statement read. “Myself, West Ham United, and Jamaica have all agreed that, given the logistical and travel difficulties involved at present, it is better for me to remain with the club in London at this time. I remain fully committed to Jamaica and look forward to representing my country in the future.”

But while Antonio is no doubt frustrated to miss Jamaica’s fixtures, some West Ham fans on social media are delighted. That’s because they are thrilled the 30-year-old will now have a chance to rest up ahead of their next fixtures after a strong start to the season.
Antonio has started six of West Ham’s seven Premier League matches and both Europa League group stage ties so far. He has also scored five goals and provided three assists in the top-flight. Only Mohamed Salah (six goals, three assists) has been involved in more.
