Gazzetta Dello Sport reported in June that the Gunners were readying a bid for the Italy international, who has dazzled during Euro 2020.
It’s fair to say that with his standard of performance in the competition, combined with Juventus’ reported interest, the ship has sailed in terms of Arsenal potentially signing him.
But Sassuolo CEO Giovanni Carnevali has thrown the Gunners a lifeline – and it could be a huge one.
The Italian claimed that his club are in ‘advanced talks’ with a mystery club but, with it being a foreign team, Arsenal fans on Twitter are excited that it’s them.

It’s the hope that kills you if you’re an Arsenal fan, but this does look quite promising.
That being said, Carnevali could simply be using the Emirates Stadium club as a pawn by pretending there are ‘advanced talks’.
The logic being, it forces Juventus, a richer club, into action.
But cynicism aside, this could be massive for Arsenal if it does turn out to be true.
Mikel Arteta and Edu have a number of irons on the fire – including a £50 million deal for Ben White – but this would excite the fanbase much more than the Brighton & Hove Albion player.
