The French midfielder did not have the best time at Tottenham Hotspur.

Back in the summer of 2014, Tottenham Hotspur moved to strengthen their midfield with the signing of Benjamin Stambouli from Montpellier.

For Ligue 1 observers it seemed quite a coup, with Stambouli impressing in his homeland for a while and seemingly offering everything Spurs needed in a holding midfielder, with the added bonus that he could also operate as a centre-back if required.

However, things did not work out quite like that, with the Frenchman making just 25 appearances for Spurs in all competitions and barely featuring in the Premier League.

As a result, it was no surprise to see him move on and his reputation back in France was made clear when Paris Saint-Germain took him from under the noses of Watford the following summer.

Last season Stambouli clocked up 39 appearances for PSG, including 27 in the league, and he ended the campaign as a champion.

That said, the sheer strength in depth of PSG’s midfield this season saw him move on yet again, this time to German club Schalke, where he is struggling to make an impact alongside his former Tottenham teammate Nabil Bentaleb.

Schalke have lost every Bundesliga match that Stambouli has played to date and their only victory came last time out, when the former Tottenham man was dropped for the match against Borussia Monchengladbach.

Things may still come good for Stambouli at his new club, but one wonders if he will only ever excel in his homeland.

Some Tottenham fans feel he was never really given a run of games to impress, yet most simply feel he was not up to the task.
