Some Arsenal fans on social media are rather miffed by Mikel Arteta’s comments on Granit Xhaka.
The Arsenal boss was speaking ahead of Arsenal’s Europa League clash against Slavia Prague, and he claimed that Xhaka has the ability to play as a centre-back after an outing at left-back.
“I can see him still playing as a centre back when it’s needed because of his discipline, his commitment & his qualities & he did a good job in a different game, for the way Sheffield were set up. We’ll decide tomorrow,” Arteta said.
As you can imagine, Arsenal fans had plenty to say about this.
Some Gunners were baffled by the idea of Xhaka playing at centre-half, while others simply couldn’t believe that Arteta had described Xhaka as disciplined.
To be fair, we can see where they’re coming from. Xhaka isn’t the most disciplined player in the Premier League, picking up his fair share of yellow cards since joining Arsenal, but the idea of him playing centre-back isn’t too out there.
Xhaka has played there before, filling in against Chelsea back in January 2020, so we know he can do a job there, but describing him as a disciplined player is a bit of a stretch.
