Stevie Nicol has backed the idea of Liverpool securing a deal for Manchester United flop and Barcelona forward, Memphis Depay, during the January transfer window.

With Premier League football set to resume on Boxing Day, Jurgen Klopp has already been dealt an injury blow because Luis Diaz has had a setback.

Diogo Jota is already trying to fight his way back, so it leaves Liverpool pretty thin in the attacking department ahead of their trip to Aston Villa next Monday.

The middle of the park is Liverpool’s biggest issue ahead of the window opening, but it will still be interesting to see how they attack the market and if they will add new faces to their forward line.

When Depay’s name was put forward, Anfield legend Nicol shared why he likes the idea of signing the former Manchester United player, as he told ESPN.

“I mean, why not,” said Nicol. “The guy has got ability. If Barcelona, considering the situation they are in financially, maybe it could work.

“If Liverpool had Depay on the bench to come on, then that wouldn’t be a bad thing. Considering how difficult these things always seem to be to work out, it probably seems unlikely.

“But as far as being a good idea (in signing Depay), then absolutely.”

DEPAY’S PAST EXPERIENCE WITH THE PREMIER LEAGUE

The Netherlands international was just 21 when then-Manchester United manager, Louis van Gaal brought his talents to the Premier League stage.

But the now-28-year-old only scored two Premier League goals and flopped for a team that had been on the decline since Sir Alex Ferguson had retired.

During that period, Depay picked up his career in the colours of Lyon, before joining Barcelona on a free in 2021, where it hasn’t really worked out for the versatile attacker.
