Andy Townsend has been waxing lyrical about Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The 22-year-old has hit a major purple patch for the Reds in recent weeks, helping them to a five-match winning streak.
Liverpool made it five wins on the spin this evening by beating Crystal Palace 2-0 at Anfield to secure their spot in the top four and qualify for the Champions League.
Alexander-Arnold will now wait and see whether his upturn in form has been enough to earn him a return to the England squad for Euro 2020, after being left out of the last selection in March.
But Townsend is confident that he’ll be back in Gareth Southgate’s plans following his performances since being dropped a couple of months ago.
He said to Peacock Sport during his commentary of the Palace win today: “Brilliant from Trent Alexander-Arnold. Lovely work. He’s played so well lately, this guy. He really has. I think when he’s at his best, he is the best [English right-back]. He’s such a good footballer.”
If we’re honest, the young right-back probably guaranteed his spot on the plane with the win over Manchester United a couple of weeks ago.
Alexander-Arnold was simply sensational for Liverpool that night, demonstrating his attacking and defensive qualities.
It isn’t often that both sides of his game are so impressive in the same match, but that was the case at Old Trafford in front of Southgate and barring a huge upset, he’ll be playing for the Three Lions this summer.
