Sunderland should consider a move for former Juventus star who is now a free agent.
The Black Cats made a woeful start to their 2016/17 Premier League campaign, but have turned things around in recent weeks, with four wins from their last seven league outings, and now sit just one point adrift of 17th placed Crystal Palace.
There are still concerns over their ability to keep clean sheets, after keeping just two all season, and their tally of 28 goals conceded is the seventh worst in the division.
There has been much talk of an exit for Lamine Kone, with West Ham United reportedly considering an £18 million offer for the Ivory Coast international (the Express).
And whether Kone ends up leaving the Stadium of Light or staying, Sunderland should consider a move for free agent and former Juventus defender Martin Caceres.
Martin Caceres celebrates
The 29-year-old left the Turin outfit in the summer, following the expiration of his contract, and is still yet to be snapped up by any club.
His availability on a free transfer represents Sunderland with a fantastic opportunity to make a top-class addition to their squad, without the added matter of any kind of financial outlay, apart from wages of course.
Caceres’ quality is unquestionable, after being capped 68 times for the Uruguay national side, and making a total of 88 appearances for Juve during his time with the club.
Martin Caceres in action for Uruguay
He is an experienced winner, with five Serie A titles, a La Liga title and a Champions League winners medal to his name during his career thus far.
The one concern for the Black Cats, regarding a potential move for Caceres, would be the Uruguayan’s questionable injury record, and he has only recently returned to full fitness following a serious knee injury.
But, considering that there would be no financial outlay required from a transfer fee perspective, he would surely be a risk worth taking for David Moyes.
