Michael Owen has stated that Darwin Nunez has ‘split opinion’ after the Liverpool forward netted a brace during his side’s 3-1 win over Southampton on Saturday.

Whilst the 23-year-old has been questioned by some, Owen thinks the big-money summer signing is showing ‘promising’ signs despite being ‘rough around the edges’.

That was proven yesterday when his goals helped Jurgen Klopp’s men head towards the break for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in a positive mood and with three points to their name.

That’s five goals in ten Premier League games for a player that is seemingly struggling, and also playing out of position at times.

If that’s the case, then imagine what he will produce when in full flow? Nonetheless, Owen spoke in glowing terms about the Uruguay star, as he told Premier League Productions (12/11/22 at 5:05 pm).

“He makes the finish look easy, it’s not the easiest of finishes,” said Owen. “It was a great ball as well. Harvey Elliott with a lovely little clip ball.

“This fella has split opinion I think since he has been at Liverpool. Lots of people thinking ‘oh God, is he that £80 million odd person’.

“I think he shows real signs, promising signs for the future, even if he is still rough around the edges. This is a lovely goal (Nunez’s second). Training ground goal in many ways. Lovely pass inside and Liverpool do that so often. And I just love my centre-forwards doing that.”

NUNEZ AT THE WORLD CUP

South Korea, Portugal and Ghana will be in Uruguay’s group for the World Cup, which could see Luis Suarez starting up front with Nunez.

The thought of them two pressing the life out of the opposition, punching, kicking and even biting everything that comes in their way could prove to be a nightmare for all.

This is one of the tastier groups at the 2022 World Cup because all of those teams will be backing themselves to qualify.
