Writing in The Players’ Tribune, Bruno Guimaraes has been discussing his move to Newcastle United and what he was told before joining the Magpies.

Guimaraes headed to Newcastle last January, and it’s fair to say that he raised a few eyebrows when he made the move to St James’ Park.

This was one of the best midfielders in the world joining a team in the middle of a relegation battle, it was a shock to say the least, even though Newcastle were the richest team on the planet.

Guimaraes knew what he was getting himself in for though, he says that he was actually told how disastrous this move could’ve been if it went wrong.

Guimaraes was warned

The midfielder spoke about his move to Tyneside.

“It’s funny, but when I had the opportunity to move to Newcastle last year, I remember a lot of people telling me, ‘You’re crazy. This could be a disaster for you. They’re going to get relegated. You’ll never make the World Cup squad if you move there,’” Guimaraes wrote.

“At the time, Newcastle were third to last in the table. Everyone knew we were in trouble. But any time someone asked me what my dream was, from the time I was 15, I always said it was to play in the Premier League one day.

“So I chose to come to Newcastle. But I have to be honest and say that never in a million years did I expect THIS experience. No, I would be lying to you if I said I would love it this much, and for the fans to have embraced me and my family like this.”

Worked out

Guimaraes’ move to Newcastle could have proven to be a disaster. After all, he could’ve ended up in the Championship this season.

However, the people who warned Guimaraes about the Magpies couldn’t have been more wrong.

Indeed he’s now a key player in a team that are pushing for the top four, and on Sunday, he could be lifting the club’s first major trophy in recent memory.

Guimaraes absolutely made the right move when joining Newcastle.
