According to Sky Sports News, Liverpool haven’t given up on keeping Gini Wijnaldum at the club.
The Netherlands international is only a couple months away from leaving Anfield on a Bosman.
Liverpool have offered the Dutch midfielder a new contract but it would appear as if it is unsatisfactory, given the fact that he hasn’t signed it.
Barcelona are by far the club who are most likely to sign Wijnaldum, if the speculation is anything to go by.
But Sky Sports reported on Friday that the Spanish giants – who are crippled by debt – could look to promote from within rather than sign anybody.
The report adds that the reigning Premier League champions will leave the ball in Wijnaldum’s court, as far as signing the extension goes.
And here’s how some fans of the Anfield club reacted to the news on Twitter:
As the fans’ reaction shows, he is clearly a divisive figure among supporters at this stage, but he shouldn’t be.
We’re talking about a player who had a huge role in Jurgen Klopp’s side winning the Premier League and Champions League over the past two years.
He’s been a fine servant to Liverpool and keeping him, if it happens, can only be a positive thing.
