‘This boy can score goals’: £20m man tipped to join Newcastle this summer

Former Premier League club owner Simon Jordan has said he believes Newcastle United is the ideal destination for £20 million-rated Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson, speaking to Jim White on talkSPORT (1 September, 12.40am).

After forcing his way into the England squad thanks to a career-best 14 Premier League goals during the 2018/19 season, the late-blooming striker looks to have pulled on the red-and-black stripes of Bournemouth for the last time.

The Cherries were relegated in July and, if Wilson wants a chance to secure a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2021, he has no choice but to walk away from the Vitality Stadium.

The Echo reports Aston Villa are prepared to make a substantial opening bid, although Newcastle have an ace up their sleeve.

The Magpies are willing to offer Matt Ritchie, a former Bournemouth talisman, as part of the deal that would see Wilson go in the other direction.

“It’s sensible business either way. It makes sense for Newcastle – they can’t score goals and this boy can score goals. It’s a deal you can see being done under the Mike Ashley regime,” predicts former Crystal Palace owner Jordan. “It’s a sensible piece of business.”

Newcastle fans won’t need reminding that during a testing 2019/20 campaign the four senior centre-forwards at Steve Bruce’s disposal found the net only six times between them.

Dwight Gayle was responsible for four of those but will miss the first two or three months of the upcoming season through injury, heightening the need for attacking reinforcements at St James’ Park.
