‘This ain’t easy’: BBC pundit gobsmacked by what Tottenham 25-year-old was doing yesterday

Danny Murphy has raved about Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg on Match of the Day 2 on BBC One (11:14pm, May 16, 2021).

The former Tottenham midfielder was impressed by the performance of Hojbjerg during the North London club’s 2-0 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Englishman was impressed by the creativity that the 25-year-old midfielder showed in the Premier League gam.

Murphy said about Hojbjerg on Match of the Day 2 on BBC One (11:14pm, May 16, 2021): “Hojbjerg, I thought he was terrific today. I was saying to Micah before the game that I don’t think he does enough creatively for me. He has been pigeon-holed a little bit into this destroyer and holding midfield role where he gets around and gets after people, and sets the tone. But today he showed some moments of class, creativity that he is obviously capable of.”

The BBC pundit added while analysing Hojbjerg’s pass for Kane’s goal: “This ain’t easy. That’s a terrific ball. If you have got someone in the middle of the park who can do that from the deeper areas for the quality they have got in attacking areas, he could become better than we have seen already.”

Hojbjerg is a defensive midfielder by trade, and the 25-year-old has done well for Tottenham this season following his move from Southampton last summer.

The Denmark international established himself as an important player under Jose Mourinho, and he has kept his place in the team under Ryan Mason as well.

What was remarkable about the Dane against Wolves was that he was driving the team forward from midfield.

The former Bayern Munich man scored a goal and provided the assist for Harry Kane’s goal.

According to WhoScored, Hojbjerg took three shots, played two key passes, had a pass accuracy of 94.2%, won two headers, took 102 touches, made three tackles, two interceptions and one clearance.

Against Wolves, Hojbjerg showed a creative side of his game that the new manager should look to tap into.

Of course, the main job of the Denmark international midfielder is to protect the back-line and impose himself in the middle of the park, but if he is able to create chances and add a few goals next season, the he would become an even better footballer.
