Thierry Henry suggests whether Javier Hernandez’s West Ham move surprised him

Javier Hernandez arguably became one of West Ham United’s most notable signings for a number of years when he joined this summer.

Thierry Henry has suggested to Sky Sports that West Ham’s ability to attract top players down the years means that it is no surprise to him that they have managed to sign Javier Hernandez, and the Premier League legend believes that the Mexican will prove to be a brilliant addition for the Hammers.

The Irons have left the majority of their fans feeling extremely optimistic ahead of the new season, bringing a number of proven Premier League players into their squad over the summer.

The deal that has arguably captured the imagination more than any other was the move for Hernandez, who, BBC Sport reports, cost the Hammers £16 million from Bayer Leverkusen.

And Henry suggested that it should surprise few that West Ham have been able to convince the former Manchester United man to move to the London Stadium – and he added that he expects the club’s decision to sign the 29-year-old to be vindicated.

“It looks like a very, very good buy for West Ham. He knows the league and he has the experience of playing for two of the biggest teams in the world in Manchester United and Real Madrid,” he told Sky Sports.

“I wasn’t surprised to see him join West Ham because they have a history of luring players like that to the club. They had Paolo Di Canio and more recently Dimitri Payet. So there is a bit of history there. I think Chicharito will do well.”

After a season where the Irons’ top goalscorer failed to reach double figures in the top flight, signing Hernandez appears to have the potential to be a masterstroke.

Hernandez boasts an impressive strike-rate at every club he has previously played for – especially as he was often used as a substitute during his time at Old Trafford – and, of course, is his country’s all-time leading goalscorer.

And having arrived for a fee that has been dwarfed in comparison with some of the other deals that have been done during this window, it appears that, as Henry expects, Hernandez could prove to be a contender for the bargain signing of the summer.
