The Senegalese international’s statistics tell a different story to his club’s lowly place in the Premier League.
Whilst Leicester City top the league Aston Villa are currently rooted to the bottom and ensured of a place in the Championship next season.
Leicester have been praised for their transfer business, bringing in the excellent N’Golo Kante from Caen. Villa have been lampooned for their own transfer dealings from French football – with Idrissa Gana Gueye one of those up for criticism.
But when it comes to some crucial statistics there is actually not much difference between the Villa ‘flop’ and the Leicester hero.
| Position | Team | Interception | Total Tackle | Appearances | Mins Played | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Idrissa Gueye | MF | Aston Villa | 135 | 129 | 31 | 2,717 |
| N’Golo Kanté | MF | Leicester | 134 | 149 | 33 | 2,660 |
| Yohan Cabaye | MF | C. Palace | 113 | 102 | 31 | 2,568 |
| Laurent Koscielny | DF | Arsenal | 107 | 42 | 29 | 2,486 |
| Claudio Yacob | MF | West Brom | 106 | 92 | 30 | 2,522 |
This was a fact pointed out today by none other than Arsenal legend Thierry Henry. Speaking on Sky Sports News HQ (22/04/2016) about recruiting gems from French football he had this to say:
“They went to get N’Golo Kante playing for Caen. So now we all know he is top of tackles in the league battling also with interceptions with Gueye from Villa.
“So is anyone wondering, for example, what Gueye is doing from Villa. He is top or second in terms of tackles and interceptions in the league.
“Nobody is mentioning that guy.”
Gueye has not been the worst of Villa’s new signings but he has certainly struggled for his best form during his time in England but might just be one player the club decides to keep on in the summer.
However plenty of teams are already loitering around keeping an eye on the Aston Villa man and he looks likely to leave in the summer.
Maybe at another Premier League team he could still make a name for himself in the UK.
