Thierry Henry has explained to Sky Sports why he was not surprised by Romelu Lukaku’s superb free-kick against Crystal Palace.

The Belgian forward curled home an excellent set piece against the Eagles on Friday evening to hand his side the lead at Goodison Park.

It was a strike that took many by surprise, with Lukaku not well known for his prowess at dead ball situations.

Indeed, of all his goals in the Premier League to date, this was the striker’s first ever from a free-kick.

Henry claims he was not taken aback by it, though, claiming he has seen the Blues star do the same in training for Belgium.

“I wasn’t surprised first and foremost because he thinks he can score in every angle, he’s a striker and he will always think that,” he told Sky Sports.

“And I have to say in training with Belgium I saw him taking some free-kicks and I had to say ‘oh okay, I didn’t know you had that in your locker. I wasn’t surprised.”

It will be interesting to see if Lukaku now takes over set piece duty at Everton after this strike.

It would not be surprising to see him do so, given the fact that before last night the Blues had only managed eight goals from free-kicks in their last 190 appearances.

Adding the kind of potency he showed against Palace would not only benefit Everton but also his own goal tally at the end of the campaign.
