Thierry Henry feels sorry for Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson due to David Unsworth

Everton were beaten 4-1 by Southampton today, and Gylfi Sigurdsson was played out of position.

Thierry Henry has told Sky Sports, during their live coverage of Everton’s match against Southampton, that he felt sorry for Gylfi Sigurdsson during the Toffees’ humiliating defeat to Southampton earlier today.

Everton were beaten 4-1 by the Saints, with Sigurdsson forced to play out of position during the contest.

The Icelandic international had to play on the left-hand side, and regularly got caught out defensively.

Sigurdsson is usually a player who thrives with attacking licence, rather than defensive responsibility.

And the 28-year-old’s goal showed just how effective he can be if given permission to roam in the final third.

Sigurdsson drifted inside to level things up for Everton in the first half, when he scored a brilliant long-range strike.

In the end it was not enough, as Southampton scored three goals in the second half to inflict more misery on Everton.

But Henry could not help but feel sorry for Sigurdsson, because of the role he was given by David Unsworth.

The former Arsenal striker said: “The poor guy had to go and defend, sometimes he was in the corner flag, tracking defenders – sometimes he didn’t know where he was. But that’s where you want to see him.”
