Everton lost against Manchester United on Monday.

Everton’s performance against Manchester United on Monday evening was disappointing, but one player who cannot be blamed for the Toffees’ 2-0 defeat at Goodison Park in the Premier League game is James McCarthy.
The 27-year-old central midfielder did not start the match, but the Republic of Ireland international came on as a substitute for Wayne Rooney on 62 minutes.
The former Hamilton Academical and Wigan Athletic star played well during his time on the pitch, and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry was impressed.

Henry said on Sky Sports Premier League on Monday evening (7:52pm, January 1, 2018) during the post-coverage of the match between Everton and United when asked if Toffees manager Sam Allardyce should have started with McCarthy: “I think he was in a situation of playing Wayne Rooney against Man United.
“And yes, he changed the game in a way that you don’t usually expect because he was putting his foot in and winning challenges.”

McCarthy has made only two appearances in the Premier League so far this season, playing a total of 74 minutes, according to WhoScored.
During the 2016-17 campaign, the Republic of Ireland international midfielder scored one goal and provided one assist in seven Premier League starts for Everton.
The Toffees are no longer in danger of getting relegated to the Championship at the moment, and the Merseyside outfit will be aiming to finish in the top 10.
McCarthy has been on the books of Everton since the summer of 2013 when he joined from Wigan for a transfer fee reported by The Daily Mail to be worth £13 million and when Roberto Martinez was in charge of the Toffees.
