Richard Keys has likened Steven Gerrard to a ‘thief in the night’ after leaving Rangers for Aston Villa.
Gerrard called time on his three-and-a-half year spell as Rangers boss today by joining the Premier League club.
The 41-year-old has been named as Dean Smith’s successor at Aston Villa.
The Liverpool icon leaves Ibrox with the Gers top of the Scottish Premiership and looking good value to defend the title that they reclaimed from Celtic after 10 years last season.
Mid-season departures are always that bit more sour due to the suddeness and lack of closure and no doubt Rangers fans will be hurt and livid.
Here’s how Keys reacted on Twitter:
Not bigger than the club
Gerrard was a massive part of Rangers, as was assistant manager Gary McAllister who has joined him in Birmingham.
But he certainly wasn’t bigger than the club and just like Celtic when Brendan Rodgers jumped ship mid-season, the light Blues will live on.
What’s important is for Gerrard’s successor to build on the very solid foundations that he laid at Ibrox.
And with a very good squad, and £4 million more in the bank after Aston Villa paid the compensation fee, they can still have a brilliant season.
But it’s vital that Rangers’ next manager is the right one.
