Thiago Silva has decided to leave Fluminense for one final chapter in European football, a move that puts him back on the radar for the 2026 World Cup.

The Brazilian defender is keen to feature for a top side again in order to give himself a chance at being involved in Brazil’s 2026 World Cup squad.

John Terry has told Chelsea to sign Silva and add some much-needed experience to their backline for at least the rest of the season.

Silva already enjoys strong ties with Chelsea after joining them in 2020, and fans would likely welcome back one of their top defenders from recent years.

According to Simon Phillips, the centre-back would be open to a return to Stamford Bridge and is even willing to accept reduced terms.

Speaking on his Substack, Phillips explained that a deal is unlikely unless Chelsea offload one of their current defenders this January.

“He’s keen on playing for a club in or near London, and obviously, going back to Chelsea would be his top choice. But he’s considering other options too,” Phillips said. “On the club’s side, unless there are injuries or sales involving Axel Disasi and Tosin Arabarioyo/Benoit Badiashile, there just isn’t room for another centre-back. If two of them were sold or sidelined by injury, then the door could open.”

“Right now, though, there aren’t any plans to let go of a centre-back during the winter window. So unless that situation changes – which is always possible – Silva won’t be coming back.

Chelsea fans clearly still hold a lot of respect for Silva. His impact at Stamford Bridge was significant both on and off the pitch – not only helping bring in silverware but also mentoring younger players through their development.

Thiago Silva has long been a guiding presence for Chelsea

The veteran defender has played alongside much of the current squad, and many remember how he contributed both on and off the pitch.

Trevoh Chalobah recently mentioned how valuable that experience was, learning a lot from Silva during their time together. Chalobah is now a regular starter for the team.

Even his leadership left an impression. Romeo Lavia once called him one of football’s best leaders, a quality that would no doubt be welcome again with such an important year ahead.
