According to Christian Falk, Newcastle believe they have a small chance of signing Chelsea forward Timo Werner in the January transfer window.
What’s the story?
Well, this would be quite the signing by Newcastle.
Falk told BILD that those at St James’ Park believe they are capable of luring the £45m forward to Tyneside this winter, for one reason.
The journalist said: “With Werner, they reckon they’ve got a bit of a chance. They’ve got contacts with the management. One of their players (Fabian Schar) is also managed by the German agency that represents Werner.
“Whether Werner will end up feeling so frustrated at Chelsea and then say ‘I’ll give it a go in Newcastle’ is the big question.”
Newcastle are said to have contacts with Werner’s management team, as they also represent Fabian Schar.
Falk adds that convincing the 47-cap Germany international to swap Chelsea for Newcastle is the “big question” for the Magpies in their pursuit.

By the sounds of it, finances won’t be an issue. Getting the 25-year-old to sacrifice Champions League football for a relegation battle will be the main task.
So far this season, Werner has been quiet for the Blues, scoring five goals in 14 appearances following the arrival of Romelu Lukaku.
Should Newcastle sign Timo Werner?
Hmm. This is a deal which could backfire for Eddie Howe – we’re hugely sceptical that it would be a success.
Werner is an experienced international who has played regular Champions League football for the past few years.
As a result, the former RB Leipzig attacker might arrive at Newcastle with the mindset of ‘if we go down, I’ll still be alright’ – Howe cannot have that.

Newcastle need fighters who know how to dig in.
Judging by Werner’s Chelsea career so far, in which he has looked rather timid, he doesn’t strike us as someone who will roll their sleeves up and get stuck in.
A move for someone like Callum Wilson, who makes life difficult for defenders and throws his weight around, should be what Howe searches for this winter instead.
