Fabrizio Romano has revealed on his Here We Go podcast that Liverpool have already made contact with Ozan Kabak’s agents with regards to a January move, but stressed that nothing was at an advanced stage.
Jurgen Klopp has been forced to contend with something of an injury crisis with regards to centre-back options this season.
In October, Virgil van Dijk was ruled out for the entire season due to a knee injury, while his Liverpool team-mate Joe Gomez will also be sidelined for the foreseeable future after picking up a similar problem on international duty with England.
The German manager has been using Fabinho, a midfielder, in central defence since then to great effect, along with a combination of Joel Matip, Rhys Williams or Nat Phillips.
But with Matip being unreliable due to injuries over the past 18 months ago, Liverpool fans are crying out for extra bodies in central defence and according to The Telegraph, Schalke are expecting a bid from the Reds for their 20-year-old stalwart.
Kabak is now available for £18 million after his price was slashed a couple of times since the summer.
Romano is one of the most reliable journalists working and writing about European football today, and the Italian has indeed confirmed that the interest is very real and that Liverpool’s board is a big fan of the young centre-half.
He said: “Ozan Kabak is so appreciated by the [Liverpool] board. Let’s see what’s going on. At the moment there is no advanced negotiations. They’re in contact with his agents. They’re scouting the player, but there is nothing advanced yet.”
