Former Aston Villa forward Gabriel Agbonlahor thinks Liverpool could really struggle against the big teams this season.

Liverpool have watched a bunch of their midfielders depart Anfield during this transfer window and are now in serious danger of losing out on Romeo Lavia to Chelsea. According to The Athletic, the Reds had made three bids for the Southampton star before their rivals came in with a £48m proposal.

Agbonlahor now fears for Jurgen Klopp with his midfield crumbling. Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “They’ve lost [Naby] Keita, they’ve lost [Jordan] Henderson, they’ve lost Fabinho, they’ve lost [James] Milner.

“They’ve brought in [Dominik] Szoboszlai, [Alexis] Mac Allister, but they need more in there. They’re trying to get Lavia from Southampton; they can’t agree a fee. They need, for me, two more central midfielders.”

The ex-England international also went on to add: “Midfield, they really need some more signings because they’ll struggle against the big teams.”

Not a good look for FSG

Liverpool missing out on Lavia would not do FSG or the club’s recruitment team any favours.

They have been chasing the Belgian for a while, so for Chelsea to just swoop in now and sign him ahead of them would surely leave supporters fuming.

You would expect Klopp to also be frustrated, as it is clear that the German really needs midfield reinforcements after losing so many players in his engine room.

In terms of alternatives to Lavia, there are not too many names floating about right now.

That may change if Lavia actually does end up joining Chelsea. Klopp will be desperate for that not to happen, but it looks like a real possibility right now.

Liverpool travel to Chelsea this Sunday and would have wanted the 19-year-old in their squad for the game against the Blues. He could still be at Stamford Bridge on the day, but on the pitch or in the stands as a Chelsea player.
