Gary Neville has stated that the Aston Villa players will ‘laugh’ at Steven Gerrard if he tells them to win the Premier League title for Liverpool against Manchester City on the final day of the season.
The Manchester United legend isn’t buying into the media hype that Gerrard is going to ‘fire up’ his Villa side to help Liverpool to the Premier League title.
On Sunday, if Villa manage to secure a result at Manchester City, and the Reds beat Wolves, then the title will be headed towards Merseyside.
It’s a remarkable scenario facing those in Liverpool colours because their club legend could do the unthinkable and help them to glory.
But Neville wasn’t on that hype train, as he sent this pretty blunt message on Instagram regarding Gerrard possibly helping Liverpool to the Premier League title.
“I don’t buy into this Steven Gerrard thing, at all,” said Neville. “The fact that he is going to go there and he’s going to get them fired up.
“Trust me, the Villa players won’t give two hoots who they are playing on Sunday. They aren’t connected to the Liverpool emotion bit.
“Steven Gerrard can’t go in and say ‘I am ex-Liverpool, make sure you win this one for Liverpool’. The players will just laugh at him.
“So, this idea that Gerrard thing and he will win against Man City is absolute nonsense. That’s not going to happen.
“The Villa players, none of them, Coutinho? Connections to Liverpool, anybody else? Danny Ings. Those Villa players aren’t thinking about helping Liverpool, at all – don’t get caught up in that. It’s pure media stuff.”

STEVEN GERRARD WILL WANT TO BEAT MAN CITY FOR ASTON VILLA… AND ASTON VILLA ONLY
The media can hype it up all they want, but Gerrard will be heading towards the Etihad on Sunday wanting to beat Pep Guardiola’s side for Villa and for Villa only.
The legendary midfielder is donning the colours of the Claret & Blue and not the Reds, if that was the case, then he would have handed them the three points before their meeting last week.
But, before all that can get talked about, Villa have to deal with their final home game of the Premier League season on Thursday night.
It’s another battle the Midlands side can have a say in, this time the relegation fight involving Burnley, Everton and Leeds.
