Steven Thompson warns Rangers against starting two up front against Celtic.

Rangers manager Graeme Murty is seen during the Scottish Cup Quarter final match between Rangers and Hamilton Academical at Ibrox Stadium on March 4, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Former Celtic star Steven Thompson has warned Rangers against starting with two strikers in the Old Firm derby this weekend.

Celtic have not lost to Rangers under manager Brendan Rodgers and go into the match as heavy favourites.

Celtic won the game at Ibrox 2-0 earlier this season, and have home advantage this time around.

Rangers won in midweek against Motherwell starting Alfredo Morelos and Eduardo Herrera, but Thompson has warned manager Graeme Murty not to do the same again.

He told Herald Scotland: “If he goes to Celtic Park and tries to play with that and a diamond in the middle of the park then they’ll get crucified.

“Murty has to sacrifice a striker and go with one up front to try and stifle Celtic.”

This will not be Murty’s first time in charge against Celtic. He was in charge for the Gers last season when the Light Blues managed a draw against them last season.

In that game Rangers started Martyn Waghorn up front with Kenny Miller in behind, although one has since been sold and the latter is out with an injury.

Alfredo Morelos is likely a certainty to start this time around, but Herrera did not exactly seize his chance this week and has not scored a league goal since August for the club, and he is likely to miss out if Murty does opt for a tactical change.
